How to Finish High School While Working Full Time
September 26, 2026 Learn Star Academy
Many adults finish high school while holding a job, raising a family, or both. A self-paced online program can make that possible, but it still takes a plan. This guide covers how to organize your records, build a weekly routine, use the support that is available, and plan across your enrollment period.
Start with a realistic timeline
Students have up to 18 months from the date of enrollment to complete all program requirements. Actual completion time varies based on accepted transfer credits, demonstrated competency, study time, and individual progress. Some adults finish sooner and others use more of that time. Plan for your own situation rather than someone else's pace.
Get your records and course plan organized
- Gather your transcripts early. Past credits may reduce the number of courses you need. Our guide on how to transfer high school credits explains what to send and the limits that apply.
- Know your credit target. The Standard Career-Ready program requires 21.5 credits and the College & Career Prep program requires 24.
- Keep one simple list. Write down the courses in your plan and check them off as you finish. Seeing progress helps on busy weeks.
An illustrative weekly study plan
This is an example only. It is not a required schedule and not a promise of any completion pace. Adjust it to your work hours and responsibilities.
| Day | Example study time | Example focus |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 45 minutes after work | Read a new lesson |
| Tuesday | 30 minutes on a break | Review notes or practice questions |
| Wednesday | 45 minutes after work | Continue the lesson and complete an assignment |
| Thursday | Rest day | — |
| Friday | 30 minutes | Quick review with BRYTE |
| Saturday | 2 hours | Quizzes, writing assignments, or a unit review |
| Sunday | Optional 1 hour | Catch up or plan the next week |
Short, regular sessions are often easier to keep than long, rare ones. If a week goes badly, pick up where you left off instead of trying to make up everything at once.
Using BRYTE and the school team
BRYTE, our AI tutor, is available 24/7 to explain concepts, walk you through problems, and create practice questions. It is a study helper and is turned off during assessments, so quizzes and exams show your own work.
For questions BRYTE cannot answer, such as enrollment, your account, billing, or technical problems, submit a help desk ticket or contact the school team at (888) 381-5335 or support@learnstar.com.
Balancing school with work and family
- Pick regular study times. Treat them like a shift you have agreed to work.
- Tell the people around you. Family members and roommates can help protect your study time.
- Use small windows. The Learn Star platform works on a computer, tablet, or phone, so a lunch break can be study time.
- Plan for busy seasons. If you know a hard month is coming at work, study a little more beforehand.
Planning across your enrollment
A simple way to plan is to divide the credits you still need by the number of months you want to study. For example, a student with 12 credits left who wants to finish in 12 months would aim for about one credit a month. This is only an illustration. Your real pace depends on the courses, how much you already know, and the time you have.
Monthly tuition is billed while you are enrolled, so steady progress can also help you manage cost. See how tuition works for current prices and payment terms. Students may cancel at any time. Refund eligibility is limited to the first 10 days from initial enrollment. No refunds are issued after this initial 10-day period.
