 Learn Star Academy is not a generic online school repackaged for grown-ups; rather, LSA is an accredited high school program designed from the ground up for adults. Students have up to 18 months from enrollment to finish; actual completion time varies with the official review of prior credits, demonstrated mastery, study time and individual progress.

A high school credential can open doors to many jobs, training programs and college pathways, although every employer, school and program sets its own requirements. For many adults, finishing high school is also a personal goal they have carried for years.

High School Diploma vs. GED®: What's the Difference?

A high school diploma and a GED® credential both show that an adult has reached a high school level of education, but they are earned in different ways. A diploma is earned by completing courses and credits, which are listed on a transcript. The GED® is a high school equivalency credential earned by passing four subject tests. Both represent real effort, and many adults have moved forward in work and school with either one.

Which one fits your goals?

Many colleges and employers accept a GED®, and others ask for a high school diploma or a transcript that shows specific courses (GED.com: college with a GED). The U.S. military also looks at education credentials when it reviews applicants, and requirements differ by branch (USA.gov military requirements). A transcript can make it easier to show exactly which classes you completed.

Course-Based Learning or a Test-Based Path?

If you already know the material well and are comfortable with timed tests, the GED® may be a good fit. If you would rather learn step by step, practice, ask questions, and show what you know over time, a course-based diploma program may suit you better. What Makes the Learn Star Academy Diploma Different

The Learn Star Academy diploma program isn't a repackaged GED® prep course, and it isn't a faster version of a traditional four-year high school either. It's built around something called competency-based education, shortened to CBE, and once you understand how it works, you can decide whether it fits the way you learn.

In a traditional high school, and even in most GED® programs, your progress is tied to time. You attend courses that span a period of time, such as in-person GED courses or a traditional high school semester.  Competency-based education flips that completely. In a CBE model, you move forward the moment you demonstrate understanding of the course material, not a day sooner and not a day later. If you already understand the subject material, whether from life experience or prior coursework, you are not held back by a fixed calendar. You demonstrate what you know, move on, and you keep building momentum toward graduation.

This structure removes waiting time, but it does not shorten the work required. Every course still has to be mastered, and there is no guaranteed shortest completion time. Students have up to 18 months from enrollment to complete all program requirements, and how long each student takes depends on accepted transfer credits, demonstrated mastery, study time and individual progress.

Because Learn Star Academy is a genuine accredited course of study across high school subject areas instead of a single test, the diploma you earn from LSA reflects completed coursework and credits shown on a transcript, while the GED® reflects passing scores on four subject tests. They are earned differently.

Accreditation: What It Means and What It Doesn't

Accreditation is one of the first things to verify before enrolling at any school. It shows that an outside organization has reviewed the school against its standards. Be cautious of so-called diploma mills that promise a diploma for a fee with no real coursework, and verify any school's accreditation independently.

Learn Star Academy is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools CESS (MSA-CESS). Accreditation does not guarantee that every college, employer, military branch or agency will accept a particular diploma or transfer credit. Each one sets its own requirements, so check with the places you plan to apply.

Bringing Your Past Credits with You

One of the most common questions we hear from adults considering our accredited high school program is some version of, "I already finished part of high school years ago, does any of that count for anything?" It may. Learn Star Academy reviews credits from accredited and recognized high schools.

If you completed coursework at a previous high school, your official transcripts are reviewed individually by the Registrar. No credits are guaranteed until that review is complete. Up to 75% of required credits may transfer, subject to program requirements, and at least 6.0 credits must be completed at Learn Star Academy. That means up to 15.5 transfer credits for the 21.5-credit Standard Career-Ready program or up to 18 for the 24-credit College & Career Prep program. Our transfer credit guide explains what to send.

Accepted credits can reduce the number of courses you still need, but they do not guarantee a specific completion date.

Built Around Real Adult Life, Not the Other Way Around

Many adult education programs say they're flexible, and few really are. When we say self-paced, we mean it in a very literal sense. There are no requirements to log in for a live class at a specific time. We assume our students have jobs, kids, aging parents to care for, or a dozen other responsibilities competing for their time.

You can work through coursework at 5:00 am before your shift starts, during a lunch break, after the kids are finally asleep, or in long stretches over a weekend. The program is built to work with the life you already have, rather than asking you to rebuild your life around school. For many of our students, flexibility is the single biggest reason finishing high school finally felt possible.

We strongly consider affordability, because cost is one of the most common reasons adults put off finishing their high school education. An online high school diploma program shouldn't require the kind of financial commitment that makes people feel like they must choose between paying rent and graduation. What Finishing Actually Changes

It's worth considering what happens once you graduate and have that diploma in hand. It's easy to discuss accreditation, program structure, and lose sight of the reason why any of these matters. Once you graduate, you can answer the education question on applications with a completed credential. Some jobs and promotions list a high school credential as a requirement, although each employer decides for itself. Conversations with your kids about finishing what you start now have a new meaning. Trade schools, community colleges and universities each set their own admission requirements, and a completed diploma and transcript is one part of what they review.
